Pre-Wedding Gown Storage
Pre-Wedding Gown Storage
It happened. Your wedding has been cancelled or postponed due to the current global pandemic - coronavirus. You’re making phone calls, emailing vendors, selecting a new date, transferring refunds + wondering what you should do with the gown you spent months waiting for + can’t wait to wear.
Whether you’re postponing a few months or a years’ time - we’re here to help you navigate all things gown storage - it’s easy, promise!
We recommend storing your gown in a fabric//breathable garment bag [ the one you received from us when you picked up your gown is perfect ]. This will protect your gown from harsh light, dust + insects - bonus :: your fiancé will know that the contents inside are off. limits. Make sure that your gown bag is made from a breathable material + not plastic as it has the potential to cause discoloration if stored for a significant amount of time.
When deciding whether to hang your gown or store it flat - consider the weight of your gown. While we always recommend hanging your gown by the hanging loops + letting the actual straps of your gown dangle - if your gown is heavily beaded or made of heavy fabrics, store your gown flat so that the weight won’t cause your fabric [ specifically straps + shoulders ] to stretch. In terms of where to store your gown, we recommend a cool, dark + dry closet on a main floor of your home. Direct sunlight is a big no-no here. If you decide to store your gown flat - try laying it across a spare bed + closing the blinds. The majority of gowns purchased from SWBB are totally fine to hang as long as the hanging loops are utilized. Still nervous about it? Give us a call. We are happy to give you specific instructions based on your gown.
Once you’ve securely put away your gown for safe keeping, try to resist the temptation of getting it back out before you take it to alterations. We know it’s hard but the more you handle your gown, the more chances of staining + potentially causing marks [ hello, foundation, I’m looking at you ]. If you absolutely can’t fight the urge, wash your hands before touching your gown + make sure to place your hand or your finger behind the zipper of your garment bag to avoid snagging any of the fabric of your gown.
Remember, we recommend attending your first alterations appointment 6-8 weeks before wedding day. If your gown has already been altered - we recommend trying it on roughly 4-6 weeks before wedding day to ensure it does not need further alterations. Bodies change all the time, so it’s not unreasonable to think that this could happen.
